Arranging a funeral
If you are arranging a funeral, then it is best to start by thinking about what the person would have wanted. If they have left instructions in the will or in a letter, then these can be followed.
If they haven't left clear instructions then the executor, or nearest relative will need to be contacted. They will usually decide if the body is cremated or buried and what type of funeral will take place.
Most people use a funeral director. If you are going to use a funeral director, then choose one that is part of either the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors or The National Association of Funeral Directors. We also recommend getting more than one quote to compare costs.
A quote for a respectful, basic funeral will include:
- Transfer of the deceased person from the place of death, and care of them before the funeral.
- A hearse to the nearest crematorium or cemetery.
- All necessary arrangements and paperwork.
- The funeral director's services.
You do not have to use a funeral director if you don't want to. You can choose to go down the DIY funeral route. DIY funerals can be less expensive and more personal but there is a lot more planning and organising involved.
Planning a funeral is always a tough thing to do. It can be very hard to deal with all of the emotions that you are going through. But just remember, a funeral is your chance to send off someone you love in the right way. It is a chance to celebrate their life and remember them.
