Having a break

If you are a full time carer for a loved one or you spend a lot of time caring for someone, it is important that you make time for yourself as well.

This can be very hard to do. But it is important for the sake of your own health and wellbeing. It will also give you the energy to carry on your caring role.

Having a break does not mean that you are a bad person or that you can't cope. It simply means that you need a bit of time to recharge the batteries. It is sensible to have a rest every so often, you can catch up with friends, have a rest or pursue your own interests.

Respite care is the term used for the replacement services which allows you to take a break. Respite care can happen in the home or in a facility.

This really depends on the needs of the person you care for, what help is available in your area and the length of time you are having away from caring.

If the care assessment for the carer or the person you care for shows that you need respite care then the local council should provide it.

You may be able to get financial support from the council to help you take a break. But respite care is means tested so you may also have to pay.

If you receive a Carer's Allowance and you have time off, there are special rules to decide whether you will continue to receive your Carer's Allowance during this period or not. The basic rule is if you have up to 4 weeks in any 6-month period off you can continue to receive your Carer's Allowance.
