Looking after yourself

As a carer you may find that you are constantly thinking about someone else's needs first. You may feel like you are putting yourself at the back of the line in regards to your well-being.

It is important that you do not overlook your needs. Looking after yourself and making time for yourself can help you manage better in your caring role.

Your health is very important. Tell your GP that you are a carer and discuss with them the impact that your role is having on your health. They will be able to offer help and support and you may well be entitled to additional health services because you are a carer.

Do not feel as though you have to do everything yourself. If you have relatives or friends around you that can help, then ask.

This may be something as simple as getting a few bit of shopping for you when they are going to the shop. It won't take them any longer to get your pieces and will save you a lot of time and stress.

There is also emotional support available to you as well. Once again, your family members and friends can help you here but so can support groups and your GP. Ask your GP what emotional support is available to carers in your area or you can contact the Samaritans.

There is plenty of help and support available to you as a carer to enable you to look after yourself properly. To find out more about the help and support available in your area speak with your local social services or your GP.
