When your caring role changes

Your caring role will change over time. The person's condition may deteriorate and they may require more support than you have time and energy for.

If this happens then you should ask their local social services department to assess or reassess their needs.

You should also ask for a carers assessment for yourself as well. Both you and the person you care for may well be entitled to extra help and support.

If it is no longer possible for you to care for their needs then it may be time for you both to consider moving them into a care home. Before you do this though do make sure you explore other housing options.

You may feel guilty about suggesting a move into a care home. But just remember, if you cannot take care of them and yourself well enough anymore then it is the best place for them to receive the care that they need.

If their needs are overwhelming you, then it is only sensible to find an alternative way of them receiving the care they need.

There may also come a time when your caring role comes to an end. This may be when your loved one goes into a care home or perhaps when they die.

This can be a very emotional time. You may have feelings of grief, guilt, loneliness and also feel relief at getting your life back. These are very difficult emotions to deal with all at once but there is help and support available to you if you need it.

Speak with your GP to find out more about the emotional support available to you throughout the time of caring and when caring comes to an end.
