Who to tell about the death

We understand that when someone close to you dies it is a very emotional time. However, there are certain organisations that you must inform as soon as possible after someone has died.

  • You need to tell the tax office
  • Return their passport to the UK Passport Agency
  • Return their driving licence to the DVLA.

Send any Lasting Power of Attorney or Enduring Power of Attorney they had back to the Office of Public Guardian along with a death certificate.

You may also need to contact other organisations depending on the situation. Other organisations you may need to contact include;

  • bank and building society
  • pension scheme provider
  • insurance company
  • employer
  • social services
  • mortgage provider, housing association or council housing office
  • utility companies
  • GP, dentist, optician and anyone else providing medical care
  • any charities, organisations or magazine subscriptions the deceased person made regular payments to.

The government does offer a service called the Tell Us Once service. This allows you to report a death to several government departments in one go. This service is not available in some areas of the country but do ask the registrar when you are registering the death.

We understand that talking about death is difficult and that dealing with everything after someone has died is difficult as well. We hope this article has helped you in some way.

If you are in need of emotional support, then please do contact your GP who will be able to let you know of the support available in your area.
