Your changing relationship
When you become a carer for a loved one it can be very difficult to know how to deal with the changing relationship.
The relationship between you will change because of the role that you are taking on. But there are things that you can do to help with this transition.
In the early stages of caring for someone try to keep the relationship as normal as possible and carry on doing things that you both enjoy.
Try to do things with the person, rather than for the person. This way they stay involved in tasks such as house work and do not feel as though you are patronising them.
They may still be able to complete some tasks and if they can, then let them. It may take them longer than usual but allowing them to do these tasks will help them feel useful and independent.
As the person's condition deteriorates you may find your relationship changes with them even more. This can be especially true if you are caring for someone with dementia.
If you are caring for a partner, then you may begin to feel more like a parent than a spouse. This can be a difficult concept to come to terms with. But it is important that you remain close and loving as well as making sure they are cared for.
Caring for someone is a difficult job and your relationship will change. But, in the early stages at least, it is important that you try your best to keep things as normal as possible.
